AI phone answering for restaurants
At 7 p.m. on a Friday, nobody at the host stand has a free hand for the phone. Julius Answer by DealsFlow answers it: reservations with party size, allergies and special occasions, plus the hours, menu and parking questions that pull staff away from guests.

Key facts
- Answers every call, during the dinner rush and after you close.
- Takes reservation requests with party size, time, and any allergies or special occasion; you confirm each with one tap.
- Takes takeout orders by phone only if your information says you accept them.
- Answers hours, holiday closures, menu, parking and policy questions from what you've written down, and nothing else.
- Treats a complaint that a meal made someone unwell as urgent.
Example: a reservation call during Friday service
This is the kind of call that interrupts a host mid-seating. In this example the owner has named the receptionist "Sofia" instead of the default, and the parking answer comes from the restaurant's own information.
Good evening, Luca's Trattoria. I'm Sofia, the restaurant's AI assistant, and calls are recorded. What can I do for you?
Do you have a table for six tomorrow night? It's my mom's 70th birthday.
Happy birthday to her. For six tomorrow I have 6:00, 6:30 or 8:15. Which would you like?
6:30. And one of us has a tree nut allergy.
Noted: a party of six at 6:30, a 70th birthday, and a tree nut allergy. Can I have your name and number?
Megan Doyle, 555-0163. Is there parking?
That's 555-0163. There's a free lot behind the building. I've requested 6:30 tomorrow, and the restaurant will confirm it.
An illustrative call. The times offered come from your availability; the name, greeting and voice are yours to choose.
Which restaurant calls Julius Answer can take
These are the restaurant calls Julius Answer takes, and it answers them from your information rather than from guesses.
Reservations
It asks for party size and time, checks your open times, offers up to three, and books the guest's choice as a request your staff confirms with one tap. It also asks about allergies or a special occasion, so the kitchen and the floor know before the guest walks in.
Takeout by phone, if you take it
If your information says you accept phone orders, Julius Answer takes the order with the caller's name and number. If you don't, it says so and passes on whatever you've written about other ways to order. It never stores card numbers, so plan on taking payment at pickup.
Hours, menu and parking
Holiday hours, gluten-free options, corkage, patio seating, walk-ins, where to park. If a question isn't covered, it says it doesn't know, takes a message and saves the question so you can answer it once.
Regulars by name
Caller ID lets Julius Answer greet a returning guest by first name and remember lasting preferences, such as a table on the patio. Stored details are never read back to a caller it can't verify.
Private events and large parties
Event inquiries go through to your manager, or, when nobody's free, become a detailed message with the date, headcount and occasion.
Guests who speak Spanish
Callers who speak Spanish, or another language, are answered in that language, and the notes your staff read are in English. An optional bilingual greeting offers Spanish at the start.
Why restaurants miss calls when they're busiest
A restaurant's phone can ring hardest during service, exactly when every person on staff is seating guests, running food or closing out a check. Letting it ring can cost a reservation; picking it up makes the guest at the host stand wait.
Many diners are fine with an AI handling this kind of call. In CallRail's September 2025 survey of 1,000 US consumers, 50% said they would use an AI assistant to book an appointment, while 13% said they wouldn't use one for any task. Invoca's 2026 B2C Buyer Experience Report found that nearly 60% of US consumers prefer a human over AI when both are equally available. On a full Friday they aren't: the choice is an AI receptionist or a phone nobody can answer.
Julius Answer doesn't replace your host. It takes the calls your host can't, and puts a caller through to a manager when one is free.
Complaints, illness and other urgent restaurant calls
A reservation request can wait for a confirmation; a few calls can't. Julius Answer treats a complaint that a meal made someone unwell as urgent, and a medical emergency as a 911 call.
| What the caller says | What Julius Answer does |
|---|---|
| Someone is having a severe reaction or can't breathe right now | Tells them to hang up and call 911 right away. |
| "We ate there last night and my son got sick" | Urgent. Writes down the caller's name, number and what happened, then tries the manager; if no manager is free, it becomes an urgent message and you get an alert. |
| An angry complaint about service, a wrong order or a long wait | Takes a full message for the manager and flags the caller as unhappy, so you get an alert. |
| "Do you have a table for 12 tonight?" | Checks your open times and offers what's available, or takes a message for the manager if it's a private event. |
| "Is the salmon dairy-free?" | Answers only from what you've written down. If it isn't covered, it says it doesn't know and saves the question for you. |
| Linen, payment-terminal and marketing sales calls | Handled politely. Your staff isn't interrupted. |

Create an account on the website, then add a card in the console to start the 7-day free trial. No contract, nothing to install.
Add your restaurant's information
Hours and holiday closures, menu highlights and dietary options, parking, reservation policy, whether you take phone orders, and who handles events and complaints. The setup assistant takes it typed or spoken.
Forward the calls you can't answer
Keep your number and forward only unanswered or busy calls, so staff still pick up when they can. On Verizon and most landlines that's *71 plus the number; on AT&T and T-Mobile, **004*1, the number, and #.
What an AI receptionist costs a restaurant
Julius Answer is priced by minutes, with every feature on every plan. For a restaurant the bigger question is how many calls arrive at the same moment: Starter answers 1 call at a time, Pro 3 and Business 10.
| Feature | Starter | Pro | Business |
|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly price | $79 | $199 | $399 |
| Yearly price (two months free) | $790 | $1,990 | $3,990 |
| Call minutes included | 300 | 1,000 | 3,000 |
| Effective price per minute | $0.26 | $0.20 | $0.13 |
| Calls answered at the same time | 1 | 3 | 10 |
| Local phone number | Included | Included | Included |
| Every feature | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Free trial | 7 days | 7 days | 7 days |
If your calls run about three minutes each, 300 minutes covers about 100 calls a month and 1,000 about 330; shorter calls stretch further, and each call counts in whole minutes, rounded up. If a holiday month runs long, extra minutes start at $25 for 100 and never expire. See pricing for the full list.

Frequently asked questions
Can an AI receptionist take restaurant reservations?
Yes. Julius Answer asks for party size, the time and any allergies or special occasion, offers up to three open times, and books the guest's choice as a request your staff confirms with one tap.
Can it take takeout orders over the phone?
Only if your restaurant's information says you accept phone orders. If it does, Julius Answer takes the order; if not, it tells the caller you don't take orders by phone.
Does it connect to OpenTable, Resy or my POS system?
Not directly. Reservation requests are confirmed in the Julius Answer console and can appear on your Google Calendar, and webhooks for Zapier or Make can connect it to other software you use.
Can it answer allergen questions about our menu?
Only from what you've written down. If a dish's ingredients aren't in your information, Julius Answer says it doesn't know, notes the allergy on the reservation and saves the question so you can answer it once.
Can a guest ask to speak to a person?
Yes. Julius Answer can put the caller through to a manager or anyone else you choose. If nobody can take the call, it takes a message and you get an alert.
Does it work for cafes and coffee shops?
Yes. Cafes use the same restaurant setup: Julius Answer answers hours, menu and location questions from your information, and takes phone orders only if your information says you accept them.
